FAQ

Should I register for Travel Or Recreation/Intramural?

Recreation/Intramural is the in-town program where teams are formed with its residents and play at Emmet Field.  This is meant to be a stress free environment for all kids at all ages no matter the skill level.  Less stress. More Fun.  Less Coaching. More Playing.

Travel soccer is the program that plays in the Morris County Youth Soccer Association for those players that are looking to compete at a higher level.  Teams will be assigned a U.S.A Certified trainer to advance their technical level.

The club recommends all kids play Recreation/Intramural and those looking to be more competitive and are willing to commit are certainly invited to try out for their age appropriate travel team.

What age group do I register for?

Do we have to use birth year registration?

Yes.  This is not a Florham Park Soccer Club mandate.  This comes from the United States Youth Soccer Association guidelines. We recognize that it creates some difficulties due to the fact that players in each grade are now split among two different age groups. It becomes especially difficult in 8th grade since the players who are in their last year in the program are not all in the same age group. However, Florham Park Soccer has no choice but to follow the above age cutoffs.

What are the Travel schedules like?

Travel soccer year consists of playing over two 10 week seasons..  There is a season in the Fall and then a season in the Spring.  Games are played at various times on Sundays with up to 2 practices a week that are scheduled upon coaches availability.

Teams may also participate in tournaments of their choosing.

What are the Recreation/Intramural program and schedule like?

PreK4 and K children have an opportunity to join in a Spring Clinic.

Fall is the main season for the Recreation/Intramural program.  Kids are grouped by grade levels and will play on Saturday mornings.

Prek4 and K will have weekly clinic earlier in the morning.  Each kid will receive a ball and a uniform to bring to the clinic each week

1st Grade boys and girls are playing together with a early morning game on Saturday and 1 practice during the week.  Each kid will receive a uniform to wear to every game.

2nd and 3rd graders will be combined but boys and girls will be separated.  Games will be later morning/early afternoon on Saturdays with 2 practices during the week. Each kid will receive a uniform to wear to every game.

4th, 5th and 6th graders will be combined but boys and girls will be separated.  Games will be early afternoon on Saturdays with 2 practices during the week. Each kid will receive a uniform to wear to every game.

All practices will be schedule by the coach upon his availability.

Why is my child playing with kids that are older?

Unites States Youth Soccer changed the registration process in 2016 to use players birth year.  If there are not enough kids to field a team at the age appropriate level you can only “play up’.

Can my child play up to the next higher age group?

Since “birth year registration” splits up players who are in the same grade we will allow players to try out for the next higher age group (e.g. a player with a 2006 birthday can try out for U13).  However, the club suggests that families think carefully before doing this since a player that “plays up” will potentially be playing against children that are more than a year older. In general our recommendation is that most players should play for the age group listed in the table above.

My child has a late December birthday, can they play down ?

No. This is not possible.
